NMP Design – Natalie M. Preuß, Product Designer in Berlin

NMP

NMP

Design didn't box me in, it opened the world up, sharpening how I see technique, process, material, and the tools I choose, day by day, analog or digital alike.

Otl Aicher put it well: the digital was never meant to outrank the analog, just to offer a different lens on the same reality.

My perspective starts with systems: how things are organised, how they grow, and how small decisions hold larger structures together. That curiosity isn't tied to one medium. It moves between digital, three-dimensional and physical work. What I enjoy most is the exchange with others, finding out together what can be shaped, built and made to work.

I've been Berlin-based for a decade now.
Og faren min bor i Norge, so there's a Norwegian branch, too.

But my roots are in Räckelwitz/Worklecy, a small village in Upper Lusatia, in the heart of Sorbian-speaking Germany. The Serbja (Sorbs) are a Slavic minority with their own language, customs and traditional dress.

Teachers and professors, each handing me a different tool.

A shelf of references I keep returning to:
Aicher, Rams, Don Norman, Müller-Brockmann, Frutiger, Spiekermann, Noordzij and many more. Art, the world through a camera lens, music (always music) and the cultures I've bumped into.

Friends, and all the people I've been lucky to meet. And before all of it, my family: culture from my mom, craftsmanship from my dad.

Navigate. Map. Perform. My product design process in three steps.

Navigate
Get to know the users behind the brief: their needs, habits and context, and the constraints (yes, even DIN norms).

Map
Structure what matters into flows, systems and a clear concept.

Perform
Turn it into products, interfaces and brands, from first sketch to prototype to code. Launch is not the end: live testing of user flows, bug tests and optimisation.

The aim → complex things, made clear and usable.

LETTERPRESS

LETTERPRESS

In a world where everything can be undone, letterpress asks you to commit. Every letter is a piece of metal, set by hand, inked and pressed into paper you can feel. Two small projects about taking the slow road, and about the people you make things for.

TYPO WALK

TYPO WALK

Cities are full of letters nobody really looks at: street signs, shop fronts, names cut into stone, a maker's plate on a lamppost. Once you start reading them, a stroll turns into a history lesson. A walk through Berlin-Mitte, looking at the city through its type.

A shop window gets a few seconds to make someone stop, and in Berlin there is no bigger stage for it than KaDeWe. Dressing one of its corner windows overnight, behind locked doors and under security, is a very different kind of night shift.

MORE PERSPECTIVES

SERVICES

As a Product Designer I work with companies building products or sharpening their brand.
My process has three steps:

NNavigate

Understand the users, the context and the constraints, from research and data, before anything is drawn.

MMap

Structure the experience around real users: flows, systems and a clear concept.

PPerform

Design the product and the system behind it, and carry the brand from screen to print and installations.

+ For larger projects I put together a team that fits the brief, from first sketch to launch and the iterations that follow.

User Interface

Interfaces that carry the brand. I design screens and components inside a design system: UI kits, Figma variables and tokens, handed over cleanly to code.

User Experience

Structure before surface, built on evidence: user research, usage data, heuristic reviews and user flows, grounded in how users perceive, decide and act.

Brand

Bringing a brand forward and outward, for companies and for individuals: identity, corporate design and art direction, applied consistently from website to print and installation.

Workshops that open the conversation. Formats and games that get teams talking, align them on their users and enable them to decide.
