RADIA

Radia is a study in edge transformation from my product design studies at KHB in 2019, supervised by Prof. Susanne Schwarz-Raacke and Luise Dettbarn.

Everything starts from a 200 mm square block. By reshaping its edges with tangential fillets, the block becomes a speaker: a stable base below and an open surface on top that holds the membrane cover. I explored the form in sketches and technical drawings, then shaped and finished the prototypes by hand in HDU foam.

FAQ

That was the first short assignment of the course Fundamentals of Product Design at KHB in summer 2019, "Transformation of Edges": starting from a cuboid of max. 200 mm, add fillets of any radius to any edge.

Every fillet ends tangentially on the adjoining faces, may run across one or several adjacent edges, keeps its radius along its path and may grow until it replaces two faces entirely.

In sketches and technical drawings first, then in prototypes cut from HDU foam, sanded and finished by hand.

The brief asked for a stable footprint and one exposed face that could serve as the cover of a loudspeaker membrane.

In Radia, the radii turn the cuboid into a clover-shaped body: the base stands calmly, the top face holds the membrane, and the block becomes a speaker.
